Selecting an Underwater Transducer: An Engineer's Checklist

Depth rating and waterproof rating are not the same specification. An IP-rated housing keeps splash and immersion out at shallow depth, while a pressure-rated assembly must survive sustained hydrostatic load at the working depth — the potting compound, housing wall, and cable gland all participate in that rating. When you request a quote, state the maximum deployment depth and whether the duty is continuous or intermittent so the housing and potting can be engineered accordingly.

Duty also decides the ceramic. A projector that transmits sonar pulses is driven hard and favours a low-loss hard ceramic that stays cool under sustained excitation, while a receive-only hydrophone element prioritises sensitivity. Echo-sounding duties combine both, which is why transmit power, receive sensitivity, and beam pattern should be specified together rather than in isolation.

Finally, plan the electrical interface early: cable length affects capacitance and therefore tuning, connectors must match the vessel or buoy side, and impedance matching to the driver stage is usually settled during sample evaluation. Yujie supplies matched transmit/receive pairs and custom cable terminations for OEM builds.

Common sourcing questions

Can the housing and cable exit be customised? Yes — housing material, cable length, connector type, and mounting thread are standard customisation items on OEM orders; send your interface drawing with the RFQ.

Do you supply matched pairs for transit-time or communication links?Matched transmit/receive pairs can be selected and documented at the factory on request.

Fresh water versus seawater — does it change the build? Seawater service typically calls for different housing materials and anti-corrosion finishes; specify the medium and expected service life in your enquiry.
